A place with its own character.
The manuscript calls the settlement Red Crossing. Its streets are rough and busy, shaped as much by traffic as by any plan. Canvas gambling tents stand among carts and wagons. Merchants, cowhands, and soldiers crowd the same public space.
A church and a brothel mark different ends of its daily life. The rail yard promises movement: arrivals, departures, and the possibility that the next place will be different. Noise is everywhere. Listening is harder to find.
The contrast with Coyote Bend matters. This is a place where strangers pass through and business can happen quickly, yet passage is not the same as freedom. The novels make room for both the bustle of the street and the calculated quiet behind a closed door.
